Elisabeth Sandmann founded her publishing house in 2004 in Munich, Germany. Elisabeth Sandmann Verlag focuses on telling the stories of strong and inspiring women, from the first Bauhaus female artists to the portraits of 200 remarkable contemporary women. Women who read are dangerous was published in spring 2005 and was an immediate bestseller, not only in the German-language market but around the globe, with translations into 17 languages. Since then, our women’s list »Beautiful Books for Clever Women« has grown to include over 50 titles, ranging from biographies and cultural history to art and lifestyle, each a unique book with well-researched content and high-quality illustrations.

Our series of high end art books feature unique photographs of nature; The Memory of Trees displays rare examples of petrified trees, Moving Beauty shows extraordinary images of sharks by underwater photograph Jean-Marie Ghislain. We also have a special interest in untold life stories, many of them with Jewish backgrounds. Lost Paintings, Lost Lives focuses on twelve collectors of art and the fates of their collections, from the time before the Nazis up to today. The Stolen Klimt tells the true story of Maria Altmann and her fight for the restitution of five famous Klimt paintings. Darkness over Germany and the The Invisibles by the director of the film of the same name.

Elisabeth Sandmann publishes about ten books per year and she and her team take great pride in creating original books which are designed in-house and illustrated and produced with great care. This perhaps explains why many of the books published by Elisabeth Sandmann Verlag continue to be translated into other languages around the world.
